This is a book of Totems. This book, itself, is a totem.
It is a book of inspirations; it is an inspiring book: a dossier of the sources of creativity of different artists and dreamers.
Totem is the book made for OFFF Barcelona 2019, the emblematic international festival that navigates through a wide series of definitions between art, creativity and technology.
A totem is an object or power symbol. A totem is a guide, an emblem that finds us and one we find. It is meaning turned material.
Aware of it or not, tangible or intangible, we all have totems.
Totem is a living testimony, where artists, creators and dreamers share these magic elements: amulets, spaces, memories, rituals, work spaces… A collection of items imbued with symbols that inspire us and illuminate us.
This book was conceived as a multidimensional experience. It was made to be read, skimmed or simply felt. The design is inspired by those deep organic roots of our environments, it is inspired by the spiritual and creative connection between our world and our being.
We have created a set of symbols, organic and meaningful, for each chapter. The black frame of each page marks the open white canvas of the artists. We aimed to be the least invasive we could, to allow color and form to be the main characters of these stories. The cover presents the logotype in bas-relief, hidden in plain sight, a texture inviting the readers to look beyond the limits of their eyes.
This book is a starting point for creation. This book is a totem we all build together, and that will surely build more dreams, art and magic with whoever owns it. This whole book is a Totem we share, and it is the first spark of something amazing.
